PLACER COUNTY WINE LOVERS LOVE EROSION

Nothing gets wine lovers more excited than in-depth discussions about geology and these days, erosion is a real hot-button issue. After all, you can’t have erosion without “eros!” Of course we’re not talking about the wasteful, soil-washing-away kind of erosion- we’re talking about how this wonderful wine-making region was formed. We’ll get to the eleven wineries in Auburn, the four in Lincoln, the two in Newcastle and the one in Loomis, but first we should take a quick peek back about one hundred million years.

As all wine lovers know, that’s when the Pacific Plate began subducting under the North American Plate, generating tremendous heat which created the base and beginnings of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. This was followed by the familiar story of vulcanism twenty million years ago and block-faulting five million back, resulting in the range that is the western terminus of the basin and range zone of North America that reaches all the way to Colorado. Forgive me if this all sounds too familiar but I am closing in on the point. As the Sierra Nevadas were rising they were also capturing rains from the Pacific and thus simultaneously beginning to erode. And as the eastern side of the mountains was the more severe, escarpment side, it was Placer County’s own western side that began to collect- you guessed it- FOOTHILLS! Please pardon my enthusiasm but, as a wine lover, I am crazy about foothills. Cloudbursts were the major sculptors of the range and they brought down all of the varied rock, soil and minerals which gradually covered the feet of the western peaks in this composite deposition of that which is coveted to grow fine wine grapes. I won’t go so far as to say you can taste the micro-particles of gold in our Chardonnay but I don’t know where it would be more likely.

OK, so that is why Placer County wine lovers look fondly upon formative erosion- it’s what’s in the soil! But the foothills offer more than that, as this climate is just right for growing grapes of excellence. Placer’s microclimates offer every variation on plenty of daytime heat during the growing season with just enough cooling overnight to instill character in the “berries.” And if you want great harvesting weather, just come to the foothills in the fall. With all of this going for it, is there a reason why Placer County wines are not more widely known? There may be some modesty at play here. It’s a lot like the reason you may not have heard of Honeycrisp Apples from Colorado’s Grand Mesa or maybe even the oysters from Tomales Bay. Once you’ve had a taste, you’ll ask why no one told you sooner. Sometimes “locals” don’t mind if the best of things stay on a word-of-mouth basis but not to worry, we have plenty of great wine to go around. So take our wine tour and then tell only your best friends about the flavors of Placer-grown varietals like Viognier, Tempranillo, Barbera, Petite Sirah and Cabernet Franc. You can pick up your Placer County Wineries and Vineyards Map at the California Welcome Center - Auburn, the Auburn Chamber of Commerce or the Auburn AAA office. As to my rapturous descriptions of the eleven wineries in Auburn, four in Lincoln, two in Newcastle, one in Loomis and all of the people who operate and nurture them, my editor informs me that I’m out of space. At least I think that’s what she said. So please take the tour, meet some of the Placer County wine lovers for yourself and be sure to add in the “cidery” in Colfax!
